Who next for the Dens Park hot seat after the departure of Neil McCann?

Dundee decided to call it a day with Neil McCann as manager on Tuesday.

The former Hearts and Rangers player was in the Dens Park hot seat for around 18 months, however after a poor start to the season the board decided to get rid.

He left the Tayside club bottom of the Premiership with just three points from eight games so far this season.

With a win rate of 33% it wasn’t the best start in management for the Greenock-born 44-year-old.

The question now is, who next at Dundee? Do they go for someone who is up and coming, like McCann, or go for the tried and tested?

Six potential managers listed below.

Jim McIntyre

The man who is linked with every managerial job that comes up in Scotland at the moment. McIntyre has been out of work since he was, in many people’s eyes, unfairly sacked by Ross County last season. He would be a solid pair of hands to take over at Dens Park which is why he is favourite for the hot seat. The only stumbling block and a very large one is that McIntyre used to play across the road at Tannadice. It may not be a welcome appointment by some of the Dundee faithful which is why the board may look elsewhere.

Kenny Miller

Many will be speaking about the former Livingston gaffer taking over from McCann, however his chances all depend on whether the board go for the tried and tested or the up and coming route. One thing Miller does have in his favour is that he knows the players and their strength and weaknesses. If the striker does take over then someone in a director of football role may have to be appointed to look after the off the park issues that may arise. It seems Dundee were looking at that option before sacking McCann.

Jim McInally

The longest serving manager in the SPFL may seem as a bit of a random person to be on the list, but over the years McInally has proved himself to be a very steady manager who gets his teams playing attractive football. McCann tried to implement a passing, high press style at Dundee so McInally could come in to  develop that further. Yes, he may be a bit of a Dundee United legend, but he also played for Dundee over two spells, so knows the club.

Jim Duffy

Like McIntyre the former Greenock Morton manager is being linked with every job under the sun. Duffy knows the most about Dundee than any other person being linked with the job at Dens Park. He played there in three separate spells as a player and has also managed them on two different occasions. If it is the tried and tested route the Dee board are wanting to go down then Jim Duffy would surely fill that. Whether the Dundee faithful would have him back is another matter.

Darren Young

If you are looking for a more left field suggestion to take over at Dundee, then look no further than Darren Young. The former Aberdeen and Dundee player has had a pretty successful managerial career so far. He won League Two with Albion Rovers and despite being hampered financially led them to their best start in a third tier season in the club’s history. He is now at East Fife and doing a pretty good job there as well. They are currently on a seven game winning streak. Many Dundee fans might think he would be a risk but wasn’t Neil McCann?

Charlie Adam

The Stoke City midfielder has been on social media over the last 24 hours speaking about his team. And it has been reported he could be interested in a player/coach role at Dens Park. I can’t see this happening a bit like the shouts of Gordon Strachan coming in. If Adam is to get the role then he will have to take in someone who is very experienced as his assistant. Who on earth he would take in as his assistant I do not know. I have seen Jocky Scott being branded about on Twitter, that’s the kind of man Adam would need to make it work.

There are a couple of managers linked with the job, Gordon Strachan, Barry Smith, Ian McCall, Alan Stubbs and Steven Pressley. I can’t see the Dundee board either having enough money to get some of them or have trust in them to get Dee out of the hole they are in.
